The future of CampusFish

I mentioned a few entries ago that I'd like to make CampusFish kick ass. In terms of blog and photo features, what would you like to see?

Today I've been taking a break from writing code to research the innards of the .Text blog system, which runs my ASP.NET blog. So much of what goes into this kind of thing is remarkably unimpressive and unimportant to users, but trust me when I say there's a lot of really neat stuff to learn in an application like that, much of which can be used in all sorts of other applications.

I mentioned this in a comment to that entry, but I'll restate it here.

If possible, the ability to make individual entries "members only."

I think those options would cover all bases.

I decided to make a go of some of the changes today and I was able to do a couple of them really quickly. They're not even hackish, they actually make sense. The photo album sorting and slug renaming has been addressed. Basically I just need to rework the style thing. If I have time in the next few days I'll upload the changes. Will probably add trackback capability as well.

I don’t know how much freedom you would want to give “us,” but ability to customize our pages would be a great feature. The fact that everyone’s pages looked the same is what was holding me back from joining CampusFish. However, the clean look, ease, and price are what caught my eye.

I would also like to see the photo album’s worked over, especially the addition of ability to reorder my pictures much more easily than the current way of moving them up or down in the list. I would also like to edit my pictures captions without re-uploading them.

To add to Junior's suggestion...

The ability to hide entries from everyone but the writer would be great to for writing diary-like entries that may start WWIII if the wrong person read them.

I'll second the feature to lock entries to friends only, or private. I believe you already know about some of the "bugs" in regard to editing entries.

Oh, oh, I have one: the ability to edit and delete your own comments.

Jeff, December 11, 2004, 11:20 PM #

It will be all style-sheet based... that's a no-brainer. It'll have some default skins you can use, and probably a place to inject your own CSS.

OK, then regarding what people may see, let me see if I get this straight...

At your account level:

  • Choose whether non-members can comment.

At the post level:

  • No one can see it but you.
  • Only CampusFish members may see it.
  • Only CampusFish friends may see it.

Is that right?

This clean cut style should stay. That's one of the big reasons why I blog here, versus LJ. It's another big reason why i've been a member Coasterbuzz for 5 years now. Customization would be great, but the whole cleaness thing is what really draws me here.

Jeff, the ability to have non-members comment, and control access to specific entries, would make CampusFish an absolutely kick-ass blog. I also like Alex's idea about editing your comments (obviously, in a world where non-members can leave comments, only members could edit comments, and then only their own...)

Oh, I just found something I'd like fixed. You can't search for members under 18, so I'm technically not on the member list.
