After reading all the replies on that entry, one questions sticks out in my mind.

Why didn't these people just stop paying AOL?

If it's that much of a hassle, stop paying the bastards and let them cancel your service.

I heard that on the radio yesterday morning.

The problem with not paying them is you have to write to your credit card company and ask them to stop covering the charge (which, BTW, we had to do after three months of trying to get AOL to stop charging us when we tried to cancel years ago).

The first video from that link shows that a fellow from MSNBC was on the line 45 minutes when he tried to call and cancel.

Generally you only need to call the bank. Some may send you a form to sign and mail back, but that's it.
