Getting LinkedIn

I've never really had much use for LinkedIn, but with the recent layoffs, others have been adding me and I've been adding them, and then it started suggesting other people I've worked with at previous jobs, so I've added them.

Today I got e-mail from a guy I worked with/for back at Penton seven years ago, and he wants to have lunch. He works elsewhere now, but he's still in a media gig. I'm intrigued, and I guess I'd like to think a little more about my own media roots. (As long as it isn't radio. ;))

I'm still not entirely sure I understand the value of LinkedIn. Anyone else using it?

I don't find value in it either.

It's really like MySpace or FaceBook for business networking.

I'm on it, but I'm not looking for a change of employment at the moment... but sending a LinkedIn request anyway.

I have an account on LinkedIn but have yet to find value in using it. Basically I joined to shut up my co-workers.

Ah, I've been blocked on LinkedIn. FAIL.

Gordon is using it. A couple of his friends who were laid off used it and were able to find jobs through those they were "linked" with.

I guess if you are in a position where you want/need a job, especially where competition is high, having an "in" with a company that is hiring is a good thing.

Sounds to me you have found value in it already.
