iPhone 2.0: No brainer

So the new iPhone will be 3G, have GPS and be $200. Um, yeah, of course I'm going to buy one. That's like an impulse buy!

Already some people are disappointed that there are no Mac upgrades announced, but honestly, there isn't a lot to be excited about. They just keep upgrading the CPU's, RAM and hard drives. I don't see any reason to mess with them. I guess a lot of people want aluminum MacBooks, which I understand. I think though that the plastic is what differentiates the models, much in the way that iBooks and PowerBooks were.

I don't see a lot of use for MobileMe, especially because you just know that Google has someone working on native apps for Gmail and Calendar (and they better remember to make it work for Apps for Your Domain as well).

I wonder what I'll do with my old iPhone? ;)

A lot of people are probably wondering what they are going to do with their old iPhones. They aren't going to get very much reselling them.

My guess is that you will not get that price; everything I have heard leading up to this is carrier subsidized $200 discount. In order to get the $200, you need to be eligible for a contract upgrade (i.e. out of your contract). Since the initial iPhones required a 2-year deal from AT&T (as does this if you look at apple's page) you still have a year to go. I am assuming that this price will be the out-the-door price at AT&T stores and the rebate price if you purchase through Apple stores.

According to Ars Technica:

"An AT&T spokesperson told us that current iPhone customers will be able to buy the 3G iPhone for $199 (no jacked up prices for existing customers), although they will need a new two-year contract on top of their current contracts. He clarified to say that if you are already in the middle of a 2-year contract with AT&T, it will start over upon the purchase of the new iPhone, and not stack on top of itself (we are awaiting 100 percent sure confirmation on this from within AT&T)."

Apple's web site has an asterisk next to $199, with fine print that reads, "Requires new 2-year AT&T rate plan, sold separately."

How do you afford all these toys. You make a lot of money?

I need a new iPod, so my old iPhone is probably turning into an 8Gb Jailbroken "thing" for music, video and experimentation.

Onceler, according to an AT&T memo, current iPhone users are eligible for the $199 and $299 pricing. The 2 year contract will be reset, of course.
