Setting the tone

Sometimes the stars seem to align in a way that you didn't expect. I got seven hours of hardcore sleep. Traffic was pretty smooth, weather was nice. My current project at work is going next month so that lifts some pressure. It really sets a nice tone for the week.

It was like this pleasant series of events that changed my mood entirely. Funny how you beat yourself up over letting things outside of your control get to you, but then when those same things can totally lift you up, you welcome them.

There was no traffic today because of Columbus Day. Trust me, I was excited for a moment too.

Shit, for all I knew the guys that put "Delay - 4 miles - exits 57-48" on the sign could've had the day off and I was screwed.

The trick, though, is getting to a place where external factors, both positive and negative, do not decide your mood or experience. Your perceptions and skills in handling your external world are the drivers that truly set the tone.

Jeff, this is totally off-topic, but check out http://www.ultimateears.com/_ultimateears/community/artisttowatch/jonathan_coulton.php, and hit the "listen now" button. His track "Code Monkey" is just awesome, and I think you'd dig the humor.

It's not easy to get to a place where external factors (at least negative ones) don not decide one's mood. It's awfully hard to not have your mood tanked when things beyond your control hit you one after the other.

No, that's definitely true. It is not easy, but it is possible. Your perceptions drive your mood and emotions, and they are 100% in your control.
