I have managed to spin up all kinds of projects in the last few weeks. I do this all of the time. I get excited about building stuff and then I'm overwhelmed, and it's not fun for a little while. Actually, it's partly not fun because of that whole "I do this in my day job too" thing, but that feeling eventually passes, too.
So here's what I hope to roll with soon:
- POP Forums v11: I've gotta let this one go as-is. I get too hung up on adding more and more and then put off everything that depends on it. The big new features are all real-time updates, where stuff appears and updates without page refreshes. It's all good, but I think the UI has to be refined so the changes make more sense. I need to think about it, which is too nebulous a task, and poorly defined things don't move forward. Bottom line, I think I need to ship it and come back later.
- PointBuzz v3: I honestly don't remember when we launched the current site. The photo management and organization is awful. People seem to enjoy it just the same, but I know Walt and I aren't fond of it. Tonight I setup the new project, got the forums working, and the forum data migration code is done. A few cleanup items, and then Walt can work on design while I revamp the photo stuff. If I buckle down, I know this can get done quickly.
- Our quilt project: I've done a little setup work for that, and a little basic organization. It's not that well defined, but Diana and I have bullet points to work through and prioritize. I'm excited to work on something totally new, but I gotta crank on PB first. It's a big year for that site.
I'm happy to be working on these projects, but I need to remember that when they aren't fun, I need to do other things with my spare time. It's always a challenge to not burn out on my hobby since it's so similar to regular work. I need to diversify my hobbies!
