If you're not from around here, we get these little critters called love bugs (Plecia nearctica). Apparently they only live for a few days, but boy do they muck up the front of your car. They're not as bad as midges or mayflies around Lake Erie. They call them love bugs because you generally see them in pairs, connected at the ass. When you see them, they signal roughly the start of swamp-ass season, and the end. They show up in June, and then again in September.
So it was with great relief that they've been out lately, because it means we've finally crossed that bridge back to the weather people move here for. Last week we had a day that didn't even reach 80, and it was glorious.
Weather is always the go-to for smalltalk, but there isn't as much to talk about when you don't have serious seasonal changes. We just have our three to four months of "gross" and then it's amazing the rest of the time.
