The ups and downs of USA Volleyball

Last night it ended. Misty May and Kerri Walsh swept every game in Olympic beach volleyball and won the gold medal. Generally speaking, I'm not as into the beach game because I think it's less exciting than the indoor game. However, these two are so amazing and push so hard that you can't help but love watching them. They even seems like nice people and never get big heads in interviews.

Most importantly, they illustrate that hits score points, but defense wins games. I think the giant Kerri is a role model for tall players everywhere that demonstrates how being great defensively makes you a better player.

The indoor women, God bless them, lost in five to Brazil. They dropped the first two and came back to win the third and fourth, but let Brazil rally seven points straight right at the start of the fifth. They're young, and it looks like most of them will be back in four years. They're inconsistent. I see a superstar in Logan Tom, who is only two years out of college. I can see her being a contributor for at least two more Olympics if she stays on.

What's less exciting than women in tight bikinis jumping up & down and falling into the sand, then hugging each other. That my friend is must see TV. I loved it when I got to see the replay...of May & Walsh's celebration...in slow-mo.

OK, don't come back with the "Freeze, take volleyball seriously" blast. I'm bustin' your balls.

NBC needs a pat on the back with its coverage. Behind every event, there's a story to be told. Who thought there was a compelling drama behind...the trampoline final? Seriously, I've been glued to the tube watching these games. I haven't been this excited since LA 1984.
I use to deliver papers and ran home to watch Mary Lou Retton on the balance beam. I was in love that woman. She actually pulled off a perfect 10. Carl Lewis & Edwin Moses ruled Track & Field and who can forget Team USA in basketball. Jordan, Ewing, Tisdale, Bobby Knight, and that was the college ranks. They killed teams on the court. Now, we just another team trying to get any medal at best. Iverson & Co. better wake the hell up.

Um, sorry, where were we?

August 25, 2004, 8:18 PM # I'm backing up you two.

I surprised no one has mentioned the constanct ass patting. Whew....

August 25, 2004, 10:33 PM # Actually, an interview I read today quoted Kerri Walsh as saying she switched to Beach Volleyball because she felt it was more challenging and exciting than indoor. The hardest part was "getting the proper tan".

August 25, 2004, 11:38 PM # It is more difficult to play beach, but what makes me like indoor better is that there's more to the offense and strong defense can keep a rally going. It's rare in beach for the ball to cross the net more than two or three times.

Yeah, if you're talking about looks, that was one hell of a celebration.

I think NBC's coverage has kind of sucked for long-form sports like volleyball and basketball. I realize they can't show an entire 2.5 hour game, but the parts they do show are too brief. The beach cuts were even more ridiculous.

Jeff

August 26, 2004, 5:37 AM # Oh, dude, gross. Did you see them from the front? Or their bad teeth? The Brazilians were not attractive.

Neuski

August 26, 2004, 1:14 PM # I'll still take the ass patting. Ha!

FreewheelinJoe

August 26, 2004, 2:42 PM # I will too. I never even watched the Brazilians, I just happened to come across that picture over at Google News and couldn't help but save it.

Jeff

August 26, 2004, 2:46 PM # Those two are hideous. The one when she smiles looks like one of the Aliens, like that little mouth is going to come out of her inside mouth all dripping with goo. Not attractive.

Neuski

August 26, 2004, 4:16 PM # But Jeff, it's all about the Brazilian asses. They will even tell you that. Leave the pretty faces for the one girls.

August 26, 2004, 6:44 PM # We don't fantazies about the Alien-like smile, we want that ASS!! They need to throw in some beer, a campfire, a grill, and a boom box with this event. Then, it's really beach volleyball.

Jeff

August 26, 2004, 9:37 PM # Man... I didn't think anyone could have lower standards than me.

Stephanie

August 26, 2004, 9:49 PM # Um...I have to disagree. The face is a somewhat important part of the "whole package." Those Brazilians were quite nasty in the looks department. Even with a bag, you'd still know what was there! I'm still having nightmares over those teeth!

Give me Misty May's booty any day. I'd be gay for that! :)

FreewheelinJoe

August 26, 2004, 10:58 PM # Awesome.

Neuski

August 27, 2004, 4:32 AM # The Brazilian ass is more tan, but how can you turn down prime American ass? The choices!

freeze

August 27, 2004, 2:10 PM # Hey, Steph. That's why God made the lightswitch.

THIS IS THE BEST THREAD EVER!!!!! I'm sooooo a man pig. I need to take Neuski and Freewheelin to a strip club. WHOOOAA!!!

Neuski

August 27, 2004, 8:10 PM # A Brazilian strip club?
